CSMM wins the contract to renovate Frankfurt’s DB Pyramid

Munich, 28 February 2022 – The 1993 Deutsche Bahn Pyramid, one of the most iconic landmark buildings in Frankfurt’s European quarter, is set to undergo renovation. Munich-based architecture and consulting firm CSMM received the nod for this full-scale modernisation project and promises to transform this building into a modern-day architectural landmark with a focus on both urban planning and eco-friendly objectives. QUEST Investment Partners is the principal investor and developer on the project, acting through its asset management subsidiary Quest Funds.

The now listed landmark, which housed the headquarters of Deutsche Bahn for 30 years, was built from 1991 to 1993 to plans by architect Stephan Böhm. With the nickname “RAW” for its exposed concrete façade, this 65-metre-high tower in the city centre is one of the last surviving icons of the architectural movement known as Frankfurt Brutalism. Roland Holschuh, Managing Partner at Quest Funds, believes in the long-range potential of this outstanding property: “Preserving the DB Pyramid is an absolutely worthy goal, if only for the sustainability and architectural heritage. CSMM is the partner with the right specialist expertise and innovative ideas to unleash a new design dynamic in downtown Frankfurt.” Finding a way to preserve the building’s distinctive look as one of the city’s most prominent architectural landmarks will be a challenge. “Projects like these are what drive our vision to promote resource-saving architecture,” according to Reiner Nowak, Managing Director at CSMM. “There are only a few buildings left in the skyline from the brutalist era in Frankfurt. By harnessing the grey energy of the existing building, we can deliver a future-proof solution with a state-of-the-art interior scheme that also makes a positive societal and economic impact.”

This revitalisation project allows CSMM to once again showcase its environmental bonafides. Through its branch offices in Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Warsaw, the firm has long advocated for preserving the architectural fabric of our cities and saving resources through renovation. “We are delighted that Quest has given us another opportunity to put our money where our mouth is, particularly when it means creating a concept for such a high-profile property.”
